Leo Season & the Songs of the Earth

Almost to the day Leo season began, I heard them in the night. Their songs shining in the darkness.

The frogsong had returned to the edge of my forest home, heralding Leo season with full-throated splendour. This joyful cacophony of frogs - each song singular and unique - felt like sunshine in these deep Winter nights.

As Mistress Moon waxes towards Full in Aquarius on August 11 (AEST, at 19°21”), the frogsong is reaching a crescendo - growing in number and volume, and erupting into a collective celebration. The amphibian choir is tuning its individual parts to conjure an Aquarian carnival of ecstasy. Songs fat with mud and pond-water, and desire; enriched with Winter sunlight.

Astrology can be many things, depending upon what for each of us resonates. Personally, I draw the greatest sense of spiritual nourishment and connection with astrology as an earth-based cosmology. This isn’t as complex as it sounds - it’s accessible to all of us, and can be experienced and known simply through quietly observing the world around us and our homes.

Some of the deepest, most profound archetypes and symbols make themselves known through the presence of the-other-than-human beings and energies that express themselves everywhere in our lived environment.

When we step into this vibrant world, soften into our human pelts, and listen deeply with our creaturely ears we can tune into a truth-speaking world beyond the listless dopamine hits of a boxed and artificial world-feed. Beyond the delusion of glittery New Age promises of “evolution” that make a mockery of hope and beauty; only feeding disconnection from ourselves and others.

Living on the edge of a forest, on what was once ancient wetlands, and where I have been fiercely protective of the beings here (no sprays, pesticides or chemicals are applied to this land upon which I dwell); the original spirits of the land (including the frogs) reclaim their space. They speak at volume, and the archetypes weave themselves through my dreams and waking life, colouring my astrology.

Leo Season this year brought the late July & August maelstrom that was the collision of Mars, Uranus & the NN.

Those of us with Taurus, Leo, Scorpio & Aquarius placements - especially between 15°-21° may have felt the impact of this Divine Storm a little more keenly. It was the culmination of a significant 15 year cycle that rocked more than a few worlds.

On August 4th, wise Evening Star Mercury stepped elegantly into Their temple Home of Virgo - also Their exaltation. Until the 26th of August we’ll enjoy this brilliantly dignified Hermès. They can help us sort, sift & make sense of all the wild cards that were strewn when the deck was tossed up in the air during the stampede in Taurus.

As the dust settles, I find that my own world was rocked in a most unexpected way. There were losses, shocks, and ruptures. And there is a new chapter opening, offering me the gift of moving deeper into the forest.

I’m having to bid my farewells to this place on the margins, but no doubt I’ll wander back here in the dreamworld - as I do with my previous homes. Yet as I move further up the mountain, and into the rainforest’s heart, it feels like a homecoming. Maybe there’ll be new frog-songs to accompany the Full Moon this month, as she peeks through the canopy of giant trees. Maybe there’ll be other spirits singing to me their songs of signs and wonders.

I shall be leaning in and listening, learning what secrets wish to be shared.

This coming Full Moon is both requiem and revival of the recent Uranus square. Hold tight, celebrate the harvest, and nourish your sovereignty with fiercely embodied connections.
